Queen Brittany: A Bourbon Tea Smash

Queen Brittany.  A refreshing springtime sip featuring an earl grey simple syrup, blended snow ice, and a sweet and tangy mix of blackberries and lemon, with a fragrant mint bouquet (tuck it by the straw so your nose

Passion fruit sounds exotic, doesn’t it?  As if it were only available on some tropical island.  But I’ve got exciting news for you:  Most local grocery stores carry it, and it’s extremely easy to use.  You can usually find it near the kiwis and mangoes.

The Super Bowl makes us crave food like nachos and ranch dressing, but because we’re sitting on the couch, not running down the field, it might behoove us to lighten our typical football-watching spread.  Cue: Salted Honey Cinnamon Cashews.

In the winter months, soup is always a favorite—you can put everything in the pot and (almost) forget about it.  In 2012, my sister and I travelled to a small village in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where we learned to make one of my favorite soups: Tom Kha Gai.

Ginger is one of my favorite ingredients.  It’s strong and spicy, and does wonders for your health.  Best of all, as soon as you ingest it you can feel it working. So, in honor of Ms. White and my favorite secret ingredient, I’d like to offer a few must-know facts about ginger.

Just thinking about milk and vodka makes my stomach turn, so I created this version using coconut milk instead.  You don’t taste the coconut flavor, but it gives the cocktail a rich, creamy texture.

Fortune Cookies

Homemade fortune cookies let you be the fortuneteller for the night.  If you’re up for a little experiment, try making them from scratch.  They’re a bit finicky and much easier if you have a friend or sous chef to help.  But if you just want to add some zazzle, buy your fortune cookies, then dip them in melted chocolate and pretty sprinkles.  I won’t tell.

I’m a ‘tini girl.  I’ll ask even the burliest, tattoo-sleeved bartender, “Can you make a lemon drop?”  Is it the strong vodka and the tart lemon juice?  No ma’am.  It’s that festive glass and sugared rim.  Ohhh that sugared rim.  I’ve got a little trick that will make every party guest swoon.

“Cheese balls” sounds so . . . cheesy . . .  which these are, but there’s also a little sophistication tucked inside: crispy, brown-buttered sage.  Plus, these balls of goat cheese provide the perfect opportunity to get your creative on:

Not until I’m in Reykjavik, the capitol of Iceland and a stopover on my 12-hour trip home, do I feel like I’ve awakened from this dream. Two people sitting next to me in the terminal are spiritedly discussing (in English) what they had eaten for lunch.
