My fiancé, who moonlights as our in-house bartender, introduced me to the 3-2-1—a clean, tangy margarita perfect for ringing in Cinco de Mayo.*   Sometimes I prefer “3-2-2” with more lime juice, so adjust the proportions to your liking.

Each year, the Environmental Working Group issues the Dirty Dozen list, which ranks pesticide contamination in 48 types of fruit and vegetables.  Even if you don’t buy entirely organic, you may want to at least choose organic for these items

Shane makes these sauces at the same time: He uses a sprig of basil in the marinara, then blends the rest into a quick pesto.

Steamed Mussels + Garlic Bread

Mussels are quite easy to cook, though a little trickier to prep.  First, soak them to remove excess sand and grit.  Then, remove the beard (a stringy membrane that the mussel uses to attach itself to rocks or other stable surfaces).

I love the combination of lemon, Parmesan, and cracked pepper with this asparagus salad, but there are lots of other flavors you can try: sun dried tomatoes, toasted pine nuts, mozzarella, or even chopped pistachios.

While flavorful on its own, butter is even better when infused with spicy, herbaceous, sweet, or garlicky ingredients, turning something plain into a satisfying meal.  You’re going to love compound butters.

Recently I complained about how rainy and dreary it had been in San Francisco, so Lindsay shared this recipe which I love.  Why?  Because this sweet treat is made with coconut sugar and cacao, two ingredients we can feel great about consuming.  And I’m crazy about the coconut whipped cream.

Passion fruit sounds exotic, doesn’t it?  As if it were only available on some tropical island.  But I’ve got exciting news for you:  Most local grocery stores carry it, and it’s extremely easy to use.  You can usually find it near the kiwis and mangoes.

In the winter months, soup is always a favorite—you can put everything in the pot and (almost) forget about it.  In 2012, my sister and I travelled to a small village in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where we learned to make one of my favorite soups: Tom Kha Gai.

Ginger is one of my favorite ingredients.  It’s strong and spicy, and does wonders for your health.  Best of all, as soon as you ingest it you can feel it working. So, in honor of Ms. White and my favorite secret ingredient, I’d like to offer a few must-know facts about ginger.

Just thinking about milk and vodka makes my stomach turn, so I created this version using coconut milk instead.  You don’t taste the coconut flavor, but it gives the cocktail a rich, creamy texture.

Homemade fortune cookies let you be the fortuneteller for the night.  If you’re up for a little experiment, try making them from scratch.  They’re a bit finicky and much easier if you have a friend or sous chef to help.  But if you just want to add some zazzle, buy your fortune cookies, then dip them in melted chocolate and pretty sprinkles.  I won’t tell.
