Homemade Popcorn (3 Ways)

A few months ago, I went to a movie by myself.  I didn’t realize it was a thing until a few friends responded, “Wait, like by yourself, yourself?!”  I saw a movie by myself, myself.  And I actually really loved the quiet escape (until the ending of A Star is Born 😭).

But my one regret?!  I didn’t BMOP (Bring My Own Popcorn).  Movie theater popcorn is shockingly expensive, and that oozy neon yellow butter?  Well, unfortunately it’s not actually butter.  (I don’t want to ruin your day, so if movie theater popcorn is your favorite (hi dad! 👋🏻) stop reading here.)

But…..

It’s usually butter-flavored (often soybean) oil, and has no actual butter in it.

Don’t worry though—I wouldn’t drop that on you without an easy, and equally delicious remedy.

Scroll down for the easiest brown-bag, homemade popcorn in three flavors: plain, cheesy pepper (dairy free!), and cinnamon sugar.

If you have no plans or you are alone this weekend, treat yourself to a matinee.  Maybe I’ll see ya there!

Food La La Recipe: Homemade Popcorn (3 Ways)

Yields: 5 cups

Plain Popcorn

Ingredients:

  • 3 TBS popcorn kernels

  • Coconut oil spray

  • Sea salt

  • 1 brown paper bag

Steps:

  1.  Put kernels in brown bag, and coat with 3-4 sprays of coconut oil.

  2. Add a pinch of sea salt, and roll the bag closed, creating a little packet.  Shake to evenly distribute the oil and salt!
Microwave for about 2 minutes (or until popping slows).

  3. Carefully open bag (there will be trapped steam!) and transfer to a bowl.  Enjoy plain or dress it up with one of the flavor combinations below!

Ingredients:

  • 1 batch plain popcorn (above)

  • 2 TBS butter, melted

  • ¼ cup coconut sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice)

  • 1 tsp powdered ginger

  • ½ tsp salt

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 200

  2. Whisk all ingredients together, then drizzle over popcorn.  With clean hands, mix to coat evenly.

  3. Transfer popcorn to an unlined baking sheet, and bake for 5-8 minutes (don’t let it brown!), just so the sugar mixture dries, and is no longer sticky.  Let cool and enjoy!
